THOUSANDS of music-lovers have signed an online petition opposing a planning application that could threaten the future of a world-famous nightclub.

Ministry of Sound in Gaunt Street, Elephant & Castle, is opposite a site where developers have applied to build 335 flats.

Southwark council has admitted enforcement action could be taken against the super-club if the scheme goes ahead and future residents complain about noise levels.

Ministry of Sound has been offered £500,000 from developers Oakmayne to help soundproof the club.

But its owners still fear complaints could see the famous venue shut down.

Lohan Presencer, Ministry of Sound CEO, said: “We are not just any nightclub; it’s the most famous nightclub in the world and the heart of a global entertainment business.

“We must do everything in our power to save our club and our business.”

The proposed 41-storey block on the site of Eileen House would generate “section 106” contributions from the developer to council coffers, worth £4.5million.

A spokesman for Oakmayne said: “We want to work with the Ministry of Sound – if they give us a chance to.”
