The fifth design for the Megabowl

The fifth design for the Megabowl

A DEVELOPER has revealed fresh plans for a high street’s multimillion-pound re-development – for the fifth time.

Glentoran Ltd has submitted new plans to demolish the Streatham Megabowl and Ceasars nightclub in Streatham Hill to Lambeth council after its planning committee rejected proposals for the fourth time in December.

Previous plans to redevelop the building of between two and nine storeys would have contained 262 flats, including 30,3000 square feet of retail space, a theatre, community hall, garden, courtyard and play space.

Underground parking for 91 cars was also included.

Objecting residents have petitioned against the development since it was first introduced three years ago on that grounds that the building was too high and would “harm the character” of the conservation area.

Greg Miller-Cheevers, head of Glentoran Ltd, revealed his fifth revision of the plans at a meeting with local businesses and residents at restaurant Chilli Chutney in Streatham High Road yesterday.

The new plans include a reduction in the number of flats to 243, redesigning the top of the structure and removing one storey from the building in Ardwell Road and one storey from the section that backs onto Blairderry Road.

A single storey has also been removed from part of the site that joins The Co-operative supermarket on the corner of Sternhold Avenue.

The rest of the design from remains unchanged.

Mr Miller-Cheevers is confident the plans will be approved when they go to a planning committee in April.

He said: “There’s interest out there. There is also scepticism that it will be delivered, but we are committed to this.

“We’ve listened to what people have said, and we’ve come back with a redesign in based on what were the reasons for the refusal.

“I’m pretty confident it’ll go through this time.”

Retiring Streatham MP Keith Hill, who attended the meeting, added: “Streatham Hill has been the poor relation on the high street.

"This is a great new opportunity for change.

“It’s an important development for Streatham. Doing nothing is not an option.

“If we don’t seize this opportunity the Megabowl will decline into dereliction.”
