COPS are hunting for witnesses after a stabbing victim collapsed and died in a food and wine shop.

Police were called at around 8.20pm on Sunday to reports of a 26-year-old man suffering serious injuries in Whitehorse Lane, South Norwood.

A police spokeswoman said he “ended up” in Subitha Food and Wine shop, in Whitehorse Lane.

London Ambulance Service pronounced the man had died at around 9pm.

The man’s family had yet to be contacted, and a post-mortem will take place in due course, police said.

Whitehorse Lane, from the junctions of St Mary’s Road and Clifton Road, remained cordoned off by police yesterday afternoon.

Shocked residents said on Monday morning that the area is normally quiet and trouble free.

Lorraine Kitchenside, 38, of St Mary’s Road, said: “I have lived here all my life and the area is usually very quiet.

“Nothing like this has happened before where the road has been cordoned off.

“I have 16- and 18-year-old children and worry about them when this kind of thing happens.”

Shaun McSweeny, 19, of Parry Road, Norwood, said: “I got back from work and got off at the bus stop by the shop just minutes before it happened.

“I usually feel very safe here and have grown up around here.”

A murder investigation has been launched under detective chief inspector Cliff Lyons from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command based in Lewisham.

Anyone with information call 020 8721 4961 or to remain anonymous Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
